Your Eye Exam

What to Expect
Please note that our doctors at Pickerington Eyecare treat and manage ocular disease (red eyes, foreign body removal, glaucoma, emergencies, etc.) in addition to routine eye examinations for glasses and contact lenses. Vision insurance is designed to cover a routine refraction and screening for potential eye problems or disease; it does not cover medical eye visits, Optomap, and typically not contact lens examinations.

If potential problems arise from the eye health screening, we may need to schedule you for further testing on another day. For these types of visits, as well as medical visits in general, it may be necessary to bill your medical insurance.

Please follow the new patient online form link below and complete it before your eye exam. Otherwise, we do have copies at our office. Please arrive ten to fifteen minutes early to complete it.

Note: Please DO NOT WEAR YOUR CONTACT LENSES to your eye exam unless instructed to by the doctor. Please bring the contact lens information with you, and WEAR YOUR GLASSES (whether they are from a recent exam or not). If possible, have your contact lenses out for at least one hour before your eye exam.

This outline illustrates a typical visit to our office, and was constructed to inform patients on what they can expect from a typical comprehensive eye examination (with refraction) and overall experience at Pickerington Eyecare.
    I. Exam Pre-testing
  • Visual field screening: automated test for peripheral vision.
  • Tonometry (aka "air puff"): checks the pressure inside your eyes for glaucoma.
  • Autorefraction: estimates your amount of refractive error (myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism).
  • Optomap: digital photo of your retinas. May replace dilation.
  • Color Vision: typically on children only; boys are more likely to be color-blind than girls.
  • Stereoacuity: measures depth perception.
    II. Exam
  • Visual acuities: did you know that 20/20 is not "perfect"?
  • Binocular vision testing: to make sure the eyes are lined up correctly.
  • Ocular motility: check for eye muscle malfunction and/or "jerky" muscles.
  • Pupil reflexes: to evaluate nerve pathway condition.
  • Refraction: "which is better, one or two?" End result is your glasses prescription.
  • Ocular health exam: to screen for any abnormal external or internal eye conditions.
  • Review of exam findings, and communication with patient and/or parent.
    III. Post-exam
  • Contact Lens evaluation (for CL wearers only)
  • Corneal topography: a "topographical map" of the cornea, used to properly fit contacts.
  • Additional external ocular health evaluation.
  • Choosing proper contact lenses.
  • Insertion & removal training (if first time wearer).
  • Evaluation of contact lens fit, comfort, and vision.
  • Scheduling for follow-up visit if indicated by doctor.
    IV. Eyewear Dispensary
  • Our opticians will then help you with choosing glasses and/or sunglasses.
  • Scheduling for follow-up visits if indicated by doctor.
